Senior Claims Counsel

On behalf of our Client we are recruiting for an experienced and qualified Senior Claims Counsel to be based in their Bermuda office.

The role will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible for the management of the Company’s claims and in particular production of Crime, Cyber and Civil Liability coverage determinations and claims decisions. The role is also responsible for advising the Company on insurance / reinsurance policy wordings and other commercial and contractual matters. The Senior Claims Counsel will sit on the Company’s executive management committee and will be expected to take an active role in the management of the Company and a wide-ranging role in the wider Group Insurable Risk Function.


Responsibilities will include: 

  • The management, analysis, assessment and negotiation of high profile and potentially high value Crime, Civil Liability and Cyber claims including the evaluation and establishment of appropriate case reserves.
  • The management of other classes of Property & Casualty claims including oversight of claims handled by Property & Casualty and Employee Benefit fronting insurers.
  • Development of claims handling and management strategies and appropriate standards for all claims related activities.
  • Working with internal and external actuaries to ascertain, quantify and analyze appropriate reserve risk metrics.
  • Management of claims relationships with fronting insurance companies, brokers, adjusters and all other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review and advise on terms and conditions of complex contracts involving the Company including insurance policies, reinsurance policies and fronting / services contracts.
  • Work with the Group's Insurable Risk and Operational Risk functions to analyze incidents and claims to inform future risk financing scope, structures and strategies.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Company’s Executive Committee including general management and oversight duties deriving therefrom. 

The successful candidate will be: 

  • Qualified Lawyer (UK Law preferred) with 5 years post qualification experience conducting legal coverage analyses for complex financial lines claims within the insurance / reinsurance industry.
  • Proficiency in the design and wording of Financial Lines and other Property & Casualty insurance / reinsurance contracts.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of operating at senior management level and Board level.
